Community pharmacists are extensively trained to support your health needs and goals, including providing expert guidance on oral contraception.

Convenient access to oral contraception

The oral contraceptive pill, commonly referred to as ‘the pill,’ is a popular form of hormonal contraception that, when used correctly, is highly effective in preventing pregnancy. Participating pharmacies now offer oral contraceptive resupply services, making it easier than ever to access ongoing care and support for women’s health.

Expert support and guidance

Community pharmacists are extensively trained to provide expert guidance on oral contraception. For those who meet the eligibility criteria, pharmacists can assess and offer resupply for approved oral contraceptive pills without needing a new prescription from a doctor. Pharmacists can discuss any questions or concerns you have, including side effects, missed doses or how to take the pill effectively to maximise its benefits.

Private consultation rooms

Pharmacies offer private consultation rooms where you can speak confidentially with your pharmacist or pharmacy staff about your contraception needs.

Available options

Pharmacies provide consultations for various forms of hormonal contraception. Depending on where you live in Australia, your community pharmacist will be able to offer you different options for hormonal contraception. Talk to your local pharmacist today to discuss your options.

A win for women’s health!

Accessing contraception is crucial for women's health. Community pharmacists, as trusted healthcare providers, play a vital role in ensuring access to contraception without barriers like limited primary care availability.

Eligibility and state-specific requirements

While many pharmacies across Australia now offer this service, eligibility for resupply may vary by state:

  • Queensland: People aged 16 years and over can talk to their pharmacist about starting or changing their hormonal contraception as part of the Queensland Community Pharmacy Hormonal Contraception Pilot.
  • New South Wales: People aged 18-35 who have been on the same pill for at least two years and had a medical review within that time may be eligible.
  • Victoria: People aged 16-50 with recent medical reviews are eligible for resupply if they have consistently taken the pill for two years.
  • South Australia: People aged 17-50 who have been stabilised on their current pill and have seen a doctor within the past two years may qualify.
  • Tasmania: People aged 16-50 who have taken the pill continuously for two years and have had a recent GP review may be eligible.
  • Western Australia: People aged 16–39 who have been on the same pill continuously for two years are eligible for single or limited resupplies.
