Across Australia, community pharmacists are stepping into a broader role to meet local healthcare needs. In each state and territory, pharmacists are increasingly authorised to treat common health issues like UTIs, provide resupply for oral contraceptives, manage a range of acute and chronic conditions and administer vaccines to all ages. See what services are available in your state or territory and find out how pharmacists are making healthcare more accessible in your community.
ACT pharmacists will soon be able to treat several everyday health conditions, including ear infections, acne, nausea and reflux, and manage chronic conditions. Pharmacists will also be able to administer vaccines to all age groups and provide treatment for uncomplicated UTIs and oral contraceptive resupply.
NSW community pharmacists can now treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections and resupply oral contraceptives. From 2026, they will also be able to treat a broader range of acute conditions and begin a trial for the management of chronic conditions. Ongoing pilot programs allow pharmacists to manage skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and impetigo.
Community pharmacists who have undergone specialised training can now provide UTI treatment in the Northern Territory and are preparing to offer services for asthma management, wound care, and swimmer’s ear. These services are expected to become permanent practice by August 2025.
Queensland community pharmacists have been at the forefront of service delivery, beginning with the Queensland Pharmacy Immunisation Pilot and the Urinary Tract Infection Pharmacy Pilot – Queensland in 2020. These initiatives quickly became standard practice, offering Queenslanders of all ages better access to safe and convenient immunisation services and enabling women to receive immediate treatment for uncomplicated UTIs from their local community pharmacy.
Queensland is now improving access to high-quality primary healthcare with two additional pilots: the Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot and the Queensland Community Hormonal Contraception Pilot.
Community pharmacists – highly qualified healthcare professionals – are receiving additional clinical training to support them in practising to their full scope. Qld community pharmacists can now treat and manage 22 everyday health conditions, including school sores, shingles, mild psoriasis, wound care, swimmer’s ear and nausea and vomiting. Pharmacists in Qld also provide travel health advice and administer vaccines.
