Cholera vaccine

Cholera is an extremely serious bacterial disease, usually caused by ingesting contaminated food or water, that can cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration. It can be fatal if not treated immediately. The cholera vaccine is recommended for anyone aged 2 years or older travelling to a country where the disease is endemic and where there is a high risk of exposure. State and territory health departments determine in which locations pharmacists can administer the cholera vaccine.

Japanese encephalitis vaccine

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is mosquito-borne and is usually asymptomatic, but on rare occasions can result in severe disease or death. You can reduce your risk of contracting Japanese encephalitis by avoiding mosquito bites and getting the vaccine.

Find more information about getting the vaccine in your state or territory.

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine

The MMR vaccine is recommended for children at 12 months of age to protect against measles, mumps and rubella. If you have not had the full course of two MMR vaccines, it is recommended that you receive a catch-up vaccination. If you are not sure whether you are fully protected, your pharmacist can review your Australian Immunisation Register status and may be able to give you a catch-up vaccine depending on the rules in your state or territory.

Meningococcal - MenACWY & B vaccine

Meningococcal disease is very serious. Infected people can become extremely unwell, very quickly. The infection can cause scarring, loss of limbs, brain damage and death. Vaccination can safely and effectively protect you from meningococcal disease. It is most commonly caused by types A, B, C, W and Y. There are vaccines to protect against all these types, but no single vaccine protects against all types. Anyone who wants to protect themselves from meningococcal disease can talk to their community pharmacist about getting vaccinated.

Hepatitis A & B vaccine

Hepatitis A and B are viral infections of the liver, which can cause mild to severe illness. The hepatitis A and B vaccines are recommended to protect yourself against them. If you have not completed the full course of vaccinations, it is advised to get a catch-up dose. Not sure if you are fully protected? Your community pharmacist can review your Australian Immunisation Register status and might be able to administer a catch-up vaccine, depending on the regulations in your state or territory.

Tetanus vaccine

The tetanus vaccine is recommended in Australia to protect against tetanus, a serious disease caused by bacteria found in soil. Children should receive the vaccine in a five-dose schedule at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months, and 4 years of age. Adolescents should receive a booster at 11-13 years of age. Adults should get a booster every 10 years, or if they have a tetanus-prone wound. If you have not completed the full vaccination course, it is advised to get a catch-up dose. Your pharmacist can review your Australian Immunisation Register status and might be able to administer a catch-up vaccine, depending on the regulations in your state or territory.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) can cause invasive diseases, such as bacterial meningitis and pneumonia, in immunocompromised individuals and children. The Hib vaccine is a routine vaccination for infants and children and is recommended for immunocompromised individuals. If you are unsure about your vaccination status, your pharmacist can review your records and help you stay up to date with the Hib vaccine, following your state or territory's guidelines.
