Travel vaccinations

Why travel vaccination matters

Travelling abroad opens up exciting opportunities, but it also exposes you to various health risks. Government data shows that up to 50 per cent of travellers experience a travel-related illness, often from contaminated food and water. More serious risks, such as rabies, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid, are also common in certain regions.

Essential vaccinations

Pharmacists in some regions can administer a range of vaccines, making it easier for you to access protection against vaccine-preventable diseases before travelling.

Your community pharmacist can provide routine and essential vaccinations, helping to safeguard your health as you explore new destinations. The vaccinations you need depend on where you are going. Some of the most common and recommended travel vaccines include:

  • COVID-19
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (dTpa)
  • Hepatitis A and/or B
  • Influenza
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
  • Meningococcal (MenACWY and/or B)
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow Fever

Depending on your travel destination, you may need additional vaccines. It’s important to plan ahead to get the vaccinations you need and to ensure you receive them in time for them to take effect. Refer to the Department of Health, for the full list of travel vaccines and to find out more about the specific vaccinations you need.

Malaria prevention

If you are travelling to areas where malaria is a risk, preventive steps are crucial. Malaria is a serious – sometimes life-threatening – disease, but with the right precautions, you can reduce your risk significantly. Your pharmacist can fill prescriptions for antimalarial medications and advise on how to take them for maximum effectiveness. But medicines are only part of the story. Avoiding being bitten by a mosquito is the best form of malaria prevention, so carrying effective insect repellents is a very useful precaution and one that your community pharmacist can help you with.

By consulting with your community pharmacist, you’ll be able to:

  • Get your prescribed antimalarial medication.
  • Learn about best practices for avoiding mosquito bites.

Get guidance on how to stay malaria-free while travelling.
