Ear infections

Ear infections are often caused by bacterial or viral infections affecting the middle ear, common in children but affecting adults as well. These infections often result in pain, discomfort and sometimes fever. Symptoms can include hearing difficulty, balance problems and fluid drainage from the ear.

Community pharmacists can help you select the best treatment for your ear infection or refer you to a doctor if necessary.

Tips for managing ear infections:

  • Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage pain.
  • Ear drops: Your pharmacist can advise if ear drops are necessary.
  • Keep ears dry: Avoid getting water in your ears when showering, bathing or swimming.

Blocked ears

Blocked ears, often resulting from earwax buildup, fluid retention, or infections, can cause discomfort and temporary hearing loss. Excessive earwax can block the ear canal, fluid from colds or allergies can accumulate, and infections can lead to swelling and blockage.

To prevent blocked ears:

  • Avoid using cotton buds: They can push earwax further into the ear canal.
  • Use over-the-counter ear drops: These can help soften and remove earwax.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent fluid retention.

If the blockage lasts more than a few days or causes severe pain, speak to your community pharmacist.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the eye's outer layer, the conjunctiva. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. Symptoms include redness, itching, and discharge, making the eye feel gritty or uncomfortable.

Common conjunctivitis symptoms:

  • Red or pink eye(s): Due to inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in one or both eyes.
  • Itching and irritation: A sensation of grittiness or sand in the eye.
  • Discharge: Clear, yellow, or green discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together.
  • Sensitivity to light: Increased discomfort when exposed to light.

Woman using eye drops

Tips for managing conjunctivitis:

  • Practice good hygiene: Wash hands frequently and avoid touching or rubbing the eyes.
  • Gently wash eyes: Wash your eyes gently several times a day with a clean cotton wool pad soaked in warm water. Make sure you use a different pad for each eye.
  • Throw out eye makeup and contact lenses: Dispose of any contact lenses or eye makeup used right before or during an eye infection to avoid reinfection.

Your pharmacist can help you select the right treatment and management for minor eye conditions like conjunctivitis. They can also advise if you should be seeing a doctor for more specialist treatment or further diagnosis.
