Whooping cough vaccine

Whooping cough is a serious, potentially deadly disease for babies. The whooping cough vaccine is free for pregnant women through the National Immunisation Program Vaccinations in Pharmacy (NIPVIP) and is recommended between weeks 20 and 32 of every pregnancy, although it can be administered up to delivery. It is the best way to protect your baby against this serious disease.

HPV vaccine

The HPV vaccine protects against the human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical and other cancers. The HPV vaccine is free for adolescents and young adults aged 9-25 through the NIPVIP program. The optimal age to receive the vaccine is 12-13.

Pneumococcal vaccine

Pneumococcal disease can lead to severe infections like pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections in certain vulnerable populations. Anyone over 12 months of age diagnosed with an at-risk condition is eligible for free pneumococcal vaccines through the NIPVIP program.

RSV vaccine

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause several respiratory illnesses, from mild colds to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Currently the only RSV vaccine funded by NIPVIP is for pregnant women. From 2025, pregnant women will be able to access ABRYSVO® at their community pharmacy to protect them and their baby/ies from serious risks and hospitalisation.

While no other RSV vaccines are currently funded under NIPVIP, there are several state- and territory-funded programs that provide free immunisation programs for infants and children.

Find out more about your state or territory’s RSV immunisation program.

Shingles vaccine

Shingles, caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can result in severe pain that may persist for months. Under the NIPVIP program, a free, two-dose course of the shingles vaccine is available for people at moderate to high risk of severe illness and complications, including those aged 65 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, and adults 18 years and over with underlying conditions.
